GAMS Goes Midwest: INFORMS Analytics+ 2025 in Indianapolis

This April, the 2025 INFORMS Analytics+ Conference brought together the operations research and analytics community in the welcoming city of Indianapolis, Indiana. With more than 800 professionals in attendance, the event provided a great opportunity for connection, learning, and the exchange of fresh ideas.

GAMS was pleased to be part of the event, share recent developments, and highlight our ongoing efforts to make optimization more approachable across both academia and industry.

GAMS Exhibitor Workshop: Fast and Flexible Optimization in Python with GAMSPy

Led by Adam Christensen and Steven Dirkse, our Exhibitor Workshop offered a practical introduction to GAMSPy, GAMS’ new Python-native algebraic modeling tool. Participants explored how GAMSPy brings the speed and clarity of set-based algebraic modeling into Python’s flexible and familiar ecosystem.

The session walked attendees through the foundations of algebraic modeling, demonstrated real-world inspired workflows—from data ingestion and cleaning to model construction and solution—and showcased how GAMSPy overcomes the limitations of traditional object-oriented frameworks. A key highlight was the integration of machine learning models into optimization problems, offering a powerful way to build surrogate models for complex systems using Python tools and GAMS APIs.

Technology Showcase: Embedding Machine Learning Models with GAMSPy

Also presented by Adam Christensen and Steven Dirkse, the Technology Showcase highlighted GAMSPy’s growing capabilities in embedding machine learning models directly into optimization workflows.

Through compelling examples, the session demonstrated how users can train a neural network, extract and verify the model, and embed it seamlessly into GAMSPy-based optimization models. The showcase also emphasized the value of using AMLs like GAMSPy for writing clearer, more maintainable code, and how it streamlines the develop–debug–deploy cycle by integrating with modern data pipelines and the broader GAMS toolset.

But the conference wasn’t all code and equations! Between sessions, the GAMS team had the chance to experience Indy’s rich cultural vibe—think iconic racing history, local eats, and some very passionate sports fans. The event proved once again that great things happen when optimization minds come together.
